Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
  2. Don't break a window or pry the door. It adds damage without getting you in sooner.
  3. Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Don't push the broken piece back in or try the lock again.
  2. Keep the piece you still have. It helps cut a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Stop turning hard: a key that bends or snaps makes the job bigger.
  2. Don't spray oil or glue into it, and don't pour hot water on it in the cold.

A lock problem is rarely only a lock problem. It is a door that swells shut in a damp week, a key that snapped on a cold morning, a tenant who left without handing anything back. In Toronto we listen first, explain the options, and do tidy work you can see before we drive off.

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceThe keypad on the smart lock blinks once and goes dark.

The fix

Winter creates its own kind of lockout. Meltwater runs into a keyway during the day and freezes overnight, a weather-exposed cylinder stiffens in the cold, and a door that shrank in January may drop its bolt out of line with the strike.

The fix

Heavy commercial doors move, and a good share of business lockouts are really door problems. A glass storefront door hangs on pivots or a continuous hinge that wear with thousands of openings a week, and once the door drops a few millimetres the hookbolt or latch binds against its strike.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairThey did not get in.

The fix

Break-in damage lock repair is the visit that turns a forced door back into a locked one. The locksmith first confirms you own, rent or manage the property, then looks at everything the attack touched: the lock, the bolt, the strike plate and wood behind it, the door edge, the hinges and any glass beside the door.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe key turns a full circle without any resistance and the deadbolt stays exactly where it is.

The fix

This service has a season here. The first wet fortnight of winter sends meltwater into keyways that freezes overnight, and doors on the north and shaded sides of a building stay iced the longest.

What the census means at the door

58%

Older homes. About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Basement and side entries on older homes were often fitted long after the house was built, with whatever lock was on hand. Bringing those doors up to the standard of the front entry, and onto the same key, is a common and satisfying job.

23%

Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).

Landlords and property managers dominate in attached housing, and they want keys organised. A locksmith sets up master systems so a manager carries one key while each tenant's key opens only their own door.

Winter is part of how we work in Toronto. Doors swell and shrink, frames shift, keys snap in cold cylinders, and salt finds its way into hardware. We choose lubricants that stay fluid in the cold, set strikes with the seasons in mind, and show you the small habit that stops a key from freezing in the lock.

  • No surprises on the doorstep. What we described on the phone is what we plan to do. If the door tells us something different when we see it, we stop and talk before going further.

  • Helping you choose well. Hardware ranges from basic to heavy-duty and simple to electronic. We explain the differences that actually matter for your door and leave the choice with you.

  • Neat work, neatly finished. Holes drilled cleanly, hardware aligned, nothing crooked or forced. A lock should look like it belongs on the door, and we take the time to make sure it does.

Which fix fits?

IfYour deadbolt only locks if you lift the door.

ThenRealign the strike and renew the hinge screws.

A dropped door binds the bolt; setting the hinges and the strike returns the smooth throw.

IfThe patio slider has only the factory latch.

ThenA keyed auxiliary lock or a bolt into the track.

Sliders lift out or pop their latch; a second lock fixed to the frame changes that.

IfThe door from the garage into the house has a knob lock and nothing else.

ThenAdd a graded deadbolt with a reinforced strike.

That door is often the weakest on the house and the one nobody watches from the street.

IfIn the parking lot your car key snapped in the driver's door.

ThenBroken Key Extraction.

Good questions about locks

Advice · (289) 804-8591

My lock is a high-security model. Can it still be opened?

Yes. High-security cylinders with security pins, sidebars or restricted keyways are designed to slow an intruder, and they do slow a locksmith too, but they open with the right technique, a decoder made for that keyway, or as a last resort a precise drill through the cylinder followed by a like-for-like replacement. Bring any key card or code card that came with the lock, since restricted keys are cut from those records rather than copied.

Can a split jamb be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Many can be repaired. A split along the grain is pressed back together, glued with a two-part wood epoxy and held by a steel repair plate or a boxed strike screwed through it into the stud, so the fasteners reinforce the repair as well as the lock. Missing wood is built up with filler or a fitted piece. A jamb that has pulled off the framing along its length or shattered around the pocket is replaced by a carpenter, with the opening secured until then.

Can you replace the lock on a sliding patio door or French doors?

Yes. Sliding doors take a replacement mortise hook lock sized to the rail, often with a keyed exterior, and benefit from a secondary foot bolt or a pin through the frames. French doors are secured by treating the inactive leaf properly with flush bolts into the head and sill, then fitting a deadbolt to the active leaf with a strike into that reinforced edge. Both are routine parts of a residential upgrade.

Can you make a key for a lock that has none?

Yes. A bit key is cut to the lock rather than copied from another key: the locksmith chooses a blank of the right size and files the bit until it clears the wards and lifts the levers inside your case, testing as they go. A pin-tumbler cylinder on a later lock is decoded or rekeyed and keys cut to it. Bring any loose keys that came with the house, since one may be close enough to serve as a starting pattern.
