Advice from the van
A door that drags, a key that needs a jiggle, a fob that works from closer than it used to. Each is a small signal worth understanding. Our advice pages explain what those signals mean and how to act on them before they become a lockout.

Good questions about locks

Lockout Services
Should I try to get in myself before calling?
By all means check the easy things: another door, a family member with a spare, a neighbour holding a key. Beyond that, it pays to wait. Credit cards bend latches, screwdrivers scar cylinders, and a forced window costs far more than a lockout visit and leaves the house less secure. A locksmith arrives with tools shaped for the exact hardware on your door, and an undisturbed lock is the easiest kind to open cleanly. Home Lockout Service
What should I have ready when I call?
The address and unit number, which door you are outside, what the lock looks like, and where the keys are: with someone, lost, broken or simply refusing. Say whether there is an alarm or a card reader on the door, who can disarm or confirm your authority, and whether the building has a property manager. If you can send a photo of the lock and the door edge, the right cylinders and cores come on the first trip. Business Lockout Service
My key has a chip in it. Does that survive the break?
Usually yes. The transponder chip and the remote electronics live in the plastic head, and the head is the part that stays in your hand when the blade snaps. Once the blade is extracted, a new blade of the right profile is cut and fitted to the old head, so the vehicle continues to recognize the chip without reprogramming. Only a cracked or soaked head needs the electronics moved to a new shell. Broken Key Extraction
What should I have ready when I call about a break-in?
Whether the police have been called and any occurrence number; whether everyone is safe and the property is empty of intruders; which opening was forced and whether it closes at all; whether the damage is to the lock, the frame, the door or the glass; whether keys, remotes or codes were taken; whether you own, rent or manage the property; and whether there is glass beside the door. Photos on your phone help the locksmith bring the right hardware. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks
Should I rekey when I move into a new home?
It is the single most common reason to rekey, and a sensible one. A resale home has typically passed through owners, agents, inspectors, cleaners and trades, any of whom may have had a key cut. A newly built home has been opened by construction crews using a builder's key. Rekeying on move-in means the only working keys are yours, and the same visit can bring every exterior door onto a single key, retiring the assorted keys you inherited. Lock Rekeying
What happens during the visit, step by step?
The locksmith looks at the door, frame, glass and hinges, measures the bore and backset, and confirms the hardware and key plan with you. The door is bored or the old lock removed, the bolt is set to the backset, and the cylinder and thumb-turn are assembled. The strike position is marked from the bolt itself, the pocket bored, and a reinforced strike fastened into the framing. Everything is tested open and closed, keys are cut and tried, and the area is vacuumed. Deadbolt Installation
Can I stop people copying my house key?
A restricted keyway helps with that. The key blanks are controlled by the manufacturer and its authorised locksmiths, so a copy generally requires the card, record or authorisation the program uses, cutting down on copies made at an ordinary kiosk. It suits homes where keys are lent to cleaners, contractors or tenants. The cylinders are fitted in the normal way, and you keep the key card safe because it is what future copies depend on. What exactly is a mortise lock?
It is a lock built as a flat rectangular case that sits inside a pocket cut into the edge of the door, rather than through a round hole bored across it. The case holds the latch, usually a deadbolt, the hub the knob spindle turns, and the springs. On the faces of the door you see the knobs, decorative plates and either a keyhole for a bit key or a round cylinder. Most doors built before the middle of the last century carry one. My electronic safe lock has a dead battery. Do you still need to drill it?
Usually not. It depends on the model. Some electronic locks offer an external contact for a fresh battery, or a mechanical override key behind a cover plate; restoring power this way wakes a dead keypad but does not bypass a lost code on its own. Others have a reset port on the lock body, which sits inside the safe and still needs the door opened by other means first. The locksmith works through that model's own documented procedure before considering anything more invasive. Safe Opening & Combination Change
How much weight does a filled safe put on the floor?
It depends entirely on the unit's size and construction, since the steel body itself usually weighs far more than whatever ends up inside it. A small document safe and a large commercial unit sit at very different points on that scale. Confirming the safe's own weight before delivery, and checking it against the floor it will sit on, is part of the assessment rather than something guessed at on arrival. What proof do I need to show before locks are changed?
The locksmith confirms that the person ordering the work is entitled to change the locks: the owner, a tenant with the landlord's agreement, or a property or facilities manager for a business. Photo identification and something linking you to the address usually settle it, and for a company a letter or a call to the named contact does the same. It protects you as much as anyone, since the same check stops someone else from changing your locks. High Security Locks

What is an interchangeable core and why is it suggested for staff turnover?
A small-format interchangeable core is a small figure-eight cylinder that slides out of the lever, deadbolt or padlock when a control key is turned, with no tools needed; larger doors sometimes use a large-format core with a different profile instead. A manager keeps the control key in the safe and a few spare cores on hand, so a missing key means the core is swapped in moments and repinned later. For a business with frequent staff turnover, it turns a call-out into a routine. Commercial Rekeying
How do you decide how many sub-master levels a business actually needs?
The number follows the organization, not a preference for tidy diagrams. Genuinely distinct groups, such as separate departments or floors with different access needs, each justify a level; access differences that exist only on paper usually do not. A hierarchy with more levels than the business uses in practice is harder to administer without making anyone's day-to-day access meaningfully better. Master Key System Design
What information should we have ready before the visit?
It helps to know which doors should be controlled, roughly how many people will need a credential, whether any of those doors are also fire exits, and who in the business will administer the system afterward. A floor plan or a walk-through on site fills in anything easier to show than describe, and neither is required in advance. Access Control Installation
What is dogging, and can every door have it?
Dogging holds the device's latch retracted so the door works as a simple push-pull for a period, useful during business hours on a busy entrance. It is not available on fire-rated openings, because a fire door must keep an active latch at all times; on those doors, electric latch retraction achieves a similar push-pull convenience without ever leaving the latch mechanically held back. Car Keys
How can I avoid locking myself out of the car again?
Make one habit stick: keys go into a pocket before any door closes. Keep a spare at home or with someone nearby, and store a spare fob away from the main one. Change your fob battery every autumn before the cold arrives. If your car offers a setting that stops the doors locking with the fob inside, turn it on. Keep a photo of your vehicle permit on your phone so identification is never behind glass. Car Lockout Service
My copied key opens the doors but the engine cuts out. Why?
The blade was copied but the chip was not. A hardware-store duplicate cut onto a plain blank has the right teeth, so it turns the locks and the ignition, yet the immobilizer hears no answer and shuts the engine off after a moment. The remedy is a proper transponder key: a blank with the correct chip, cut to your blade and programmed to the car, or a chip cloned from a working original. Car Key Replacement
Is there a reason to make a spare now rather than waiting until the original is lost?
The whole process depends on having a working key to read or trace from, so making the spare while that key still exists is simpler than the alternative of proving ownership without any key present and building access from scratch. A spare made now also means a future lost key is solved by reaching for the second one already tested and waiting, rather than starting the whole process from nothing. Spare Car Key Duplication
Do I need to bring my car anywhere, or does the work happen where it is?
The vehicle generally stays where it is parked, since the equipment used for programming travels to it rather than the other way around. What matters more than the location is that the vehicle itself is present for the visit, since most procedures read information directly from the car as part of registering the new fob.
